Sensory Integration Therapy (SI Therapy) aims to help kids with sensory processing issues (which some people may refer to as “sensory integration disorder”) by exposing them to sensory stimulation in a structured, repetitive way. The theory behind it is that over time, the brain will adapt and allow kids to process and react to sensations more efficiently.
Individuals that require sensory integration therapy may be either over- or under-sensitive to environmental stimuli and may have difficulties with motor tasks. As a result, their attention span, ability to regulate activity level, safety, learning skills and behavior control may be significantly affected.
SI therapy helps the brain’s nervous system better process sensory information through play activities, sensory diets and other therapy techniques such as deep pressure and tactile input. Play activities include riding a scooter board, swinging, sitting on an exercise ball, handling various textured items, pillow squeezes, bean bag crashing and other similar activities. Sensory Diet is an individualized plan of physical activities and accommodations to help a person meet their sensory needs. This plan provides the sensory input needed to stay focused and organized throughout the day.
